Saturday the JHS wrestling team did all they could to overcome, and bring home another sectional team title, but fell short. Although 2nd place there were lots of positives. It was possibly the most improved team I have ever coached.
Over the past ten years the JHS wrestlers have brought home 5 sectional championships, and 5 runner up performances.
This one was a tough one. After a 11th place finish at Jeff Classic, a 5th place finish at HHC, The kids did all they could to improve. They had morning and afternoon practices, shifted weights to find a better lineup, and put the best team they could on the mat this Saturday.
After the first round the Jeff wrestlers were ahead by 12, after the second round they were behind by 20, after the third round they were down 1.5 points……..and did their best to hang on bet fell short – losing to Floyd Central by 9 points.
This was the first time we had 2 freshman in the lineup in 12 years. We only had 2 returning regional qualifiers, and 3 returning starters in the lineup. It was a test all year long that the kids wouldn’t give up on, and at the end of the year they truly came together, and ALMOST pulled off the upset.
I was proud of them for truly attempting to overcome a tough season – and know that they all feel a sense of accomplishment knowing they truly gave their best shot.
There were lots of POSITIVES!!!! All 14 wrestlers placed in the top 6 – no other team at sectionals did this. We had 2 champions Darian Newbolt (SOPHOMORE), and Gavan Jolley-Little.
We had 12 kids qualify for regionals – that is tied with FC for the most in our sectional and most in our regional.
We will have 8 returning starters to the line up next year (a huge plus over 2!), and the kids are already making their off-season plans for Ohio State Wrestling Camp, 5 off-season tournaments, a few will go to Iowa for a meet, a few will go to Fargo for a meet, and a few have already made intentions to go wrestle in Japan this summer.
But first they will support eachother to the last match as 12 of them head to regionals this coming weekend…………..followed by all 42 of them coaching our annual elementary league to help give back to the sport that is giving them so much.
Placements for our kids go as followed:
106 – Noah Morrison – 5th place
113 – Steven Jones – 2nd place – regional qualifier
120 – Tavion Lucas – 3rd place – regional qualifier
126 – Joseph DeLeon – 2nd place – regional qualifier
132 – Jack Ferraro – 6th place
138 – Josh Sauer – 3rd place – regional qualifier
145 – Freddie Hudson – 4th place – regional qualifier
152 – Donovan Smith – 4th place – regional qualifier
160 – Devyn Long – 4th place – regional qualifier

195 – Darion Bam Bam Newbolt – 1st place Regional qualifier
220 – Gary Gaines – 3rd place – regional qualifier
