Last night the Lady Red Devils Track Team put up some strong performances at Bloomington’s Regional meet. Finishing third overall against nearly 40 other teams was a huge success. Bloomington South led the way with 84 points, Bloomington North had a strong second place and Jeffersonville scored 53 points putting them amongst the top three teams.
Four young ladies in four events will advance to the state meet next weekend for the highest level of high school track and field competition. Freshman Aa’Leiah Winford dominated the shorts sprints winning the 100 and 200. Winford also started off the champion 4×100 meter relay. Senior Jhala Henry also took the gold in the 400 meters for the second year in a row, anchored the winning the 4×100 and finished second in the 200 to teammate Winford. Sophomores Tamia Todd and Callista Tate were also intricate legs in the 4×100 relay. These four young ladies will dance at the Big Dance! They are looking to break the 1977 school record of 49.00. Last night, they ran 49.42.
Although, not all of the events qualified for state, many performed season best and that is the way to end a season. The 4×800 ran to a respected 6th place overall. Junior Taylor Wooten ran a heck of a third leg helping the team win their heat. Other 4×800 team members were Senior Josey Noel and sophomores Amirah Daugharty and Allison Blevins. Junior Mariah Owens snatched a seventh place finish in the pole vault to help round the team score.
