In one of the best local rivalries of the last past decade, the No. 13 Jeffersonville boys tennis team battled No. 12 Floyd Central for the Hoosier Hills Conference title on Sept. 15.

However this time, it was the Highlanders who got the best of the Red Devils, picking up a 3-2 victory to clinch the conference championship, 3-2. Jeffersonville settled for the silver, with two seniors picking up the lone points for JHS.

It was the second time that Floyd Central has defeated Jeff High this season.

At No. 1 singles, senior Keith Asplund downed Kyle Poe 6-2, 6-0 to pick up the first Red Devils win of the afternoon. Later, No. 2 singles player Jerid Inman battled back from a one set deficit to win Jeff’s second point, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

But Floyd Central’s double tandems proved to be too costly for the Red Devils. The FC No. 1 doubles team of Alec Poe and Noah Nuehauser downed Trey Botorff and Coby Kayrouz, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. At No. 2 doubles, Eric Whitehouse and Gabriel Core defeated Adam Crawford and Matthew Monroe, 6-4, 6-3.

The deciding point came down to No. 3 singles, where Floyd Central’s Connor Mason downed Blake Winchell, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The Red Devils will have the opportunity to garner some redemption when Sectional rolls around.

On Monday, Sept. 25, the IHSAA released the Sectional pairings live on In Sectional 31, Jeffersonville will take on New Washington in the opening round. If the Red Devils win, they would face the winner of Clarksville/Providence in the Sectional championship.
