Lady Red Devils Open Season with Thrilling Win Over Defending State Champs The Jeffersonville girls’ wrestling team kicked off their second IHSAA season with a statement, edging out defending state champion Columbus East 43-42 before falling in a close 43-30 match to returning sectional champion Jennings County. It was a demanding opening day for the Lady Red Devils, facing two of the toughest programs in the state right out of the gate — but the Jeff girls proved they’re ready to compete. Against Columbus East, Jeffersonville picked up key wins from Kristin Brown (pin), Abi Lemon (pin), Yarely Solis (pin), Izzy Stewart (52-second pin), and Ra’janeae Kannamore (pin). The team also earned forfeit victories from Levi Evans, Fatima Carillo, Abril Andres, and Envy Diaz, securing the narrow team victory. In the dual versus Jennings County, Jeffersonville’s wins came from Kristin Brown (pin), Olivia Horton (forfeit), Izzy Stewart (pin), Fatima Carillo (pin), and Lili Shepherd (forfeit). Head Coach Joe Somerville praised the effort and toughness of his squad, noting that starting the season against two powerhouse programs will only make the team stronger moving forward. Program Dorector, Danny Struck said he couldnt be happier with the direction the girls are headed Coach Strucks old high school coach, Coach Howard Jones, even brought the girls "Grandma Cookies", which are always a highlight when visiting Coach Struck's alma mater. The Lady Red Devils return to action this Saturday when they host the Jeff Invitational, an eight-team event featuring some of the region’s top competitors.
