Jeffersonville Girls Wrestling continued its historic season by sending six wrestlers to the IHSAA Girls Wrestling Regionals, where athletes must win two matches to qualify for the state finals. Competing for the Red Devils were Levi Evans (105), Fatima Carrillo (120), Abi Lemon (125), Scarlett McCrae (145), Alia Griffith (155), and Yarely Solis (190). All six represented Jeffersonville with toughness and pride, and the weekend ended with a major highlight as Abi Lemon qualified for the IHSAA Girls State Finals, while several others gained valuable postseason experience and will return stronger next season. At 105 pounds, Levi Evans battled in the championship round of 16, falling to a tough opponent in Lola Bailey of Evansville North. Although Evans finished 0-1 on the day, the junior gained critical regional-level experience that will pay dividends moving forward. At 120 pounds, freshman Fatima Carrillo showed why she is one of the program’s rising stars. Carrillo earned a decisive 10-4 decision victory in her opening match before running into the eventual regional champion in the quarterfinals. She finished the tournament 1-1, advancing to the second round and earning two team points. “Fatima competed with confidence and composure well beyond her years,” said Wrestling Director Coach Danny Struck. “She belongs at this level, and her future is extremely bright.” Junior Abi Lemon delivered one of the strongest performances of the tournament for Jeffersonville at 125 pounds, finishing fourth overall and qualifying for the IHSAA Girls State Finals. Lemon opened the tournament with back-to-back falls, securing wins in both the round of 16 and quarterfinals to punch her ticket to state. She later battled through the semifinals and third-place match, finishing 2-2 on the day and scoring 15 team points. “Abi is the example of what a high-level young person looks like,” Struck said. “She’s not just a competitor on the mat, field, or court — she’s a competitor in the classroom and in life.” Lemon’s success is no surprise given her resume. She is a four-sport athlete, serving as a kicker on the football team, an all-conference soccer player, an all-conference tennis player, and now a state finalist in wrestling. She also serves as the President of the National Honor Society, exemplifying excellence in every area. At 145 pounds, Scarlett McCrae competed hard in the championship round of 16, falling to a highly ranked opponent. McCrae finished 0-1, but gained valuable experience against elite postseason competition. Sophomore Alia Griffith represented Jeffersonville at 155 pounds, dropping her opening match in the round of 16. While her day ended early, Griffith’s regional appearance marks an important step in her development as a returning wrestler next season. At 190 pounds, Yarely Solis opened the tournament with an impressive fall in the championship round of 16, showing power and control against a strong opponent. Solis advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to a tough opponent, finishing 1-1 and scoring four team points. Head Girls Coach Coach Somerville emphasized how important these performances are for the program’s future. “We are extremely excited — not just for Abi, but for all six of our girls,” Somerville said. “Every one of them competed hard, learned, and grew. What makes this special is that all six will be returning. We’ve never had this many girls returning with regional experience at this level.” The weekend began on Friday night with a team trip to Indiana University, where the girls toured the campus, visited the football stadium, and enjoyed dinner at Mother Bear’s Pizza. With IU hosting a national semifinal football game that night, the team experienced the excitement of a major college campus on game day, even taking photos in front of the stadium. “It’s important that we show our kids they can see the world through wrestling,” Struck said. “These moments matter just as much as the wins.” Looking ahead, Jeffersonville returns 15 girls next season, setting the stage for continued growth. Lemon will now lead the way, giving her teammates a firsthand look at what the state finals experience demands. “Abi will show them what it takes,” Somerville added. “And next year, they’ll all be chasing that same goal.” Congratulations to Levi Evans, Fatima Carrillo, Abi Lemon, Scarlett McCrae, Alia Griffith, and Yarely Solis on an outstanding postseason performance — and best of luck to Abi Lemon as she represents Jeffersonville at the IHSAA Girls State Finals.
