April 13, 2024 - The Red Devil Sprinters have been showcasing their talents in two Showcase events the last two weeks. On Friday April 5, they traveled to Princeton for the Tri State Showcase and last night they continued in Lafayette for the Sprinters Showcase. Tri-State Showcase - In an event that pitted the best athletes in the Tri State area around Evansville, the Devils started the outdoor season with a bang. Junior Nizaiah Carr placed 2nd in the 200 with a time of 22.86. He followed that up later in the evening with a 3rd place finish in the 100 at 11.25. Senior Jeremiah Lane ran solid 400 coming in at 55.31, and junior Mariah Smith placed 2nd in the 300 hurdles at 49.72. But the night belonged to senior Lyric Steele. She finished 1st in both the 100 and 200 with times of 12.18 and 25.24 respectively. She outdueled state contender Amaya Royal of Castle in both events. The sprinters then took their talents to Lafayette last night for the Sprinters Showcase. A cool, windy night saw Junior Nizaiah Carr pull up at the finish of the 4x100 with an apparent hamstring injury. Juniors KeiAsia Camp and Mariah Smith had solid efforts in the 100 and as legs on the 4th place women's 4x100 team. A 3rd member of that relay, freshman Emma Perissi had a season's best 13.41 in the 100 to provide a surprise for the evening. But once again, as the previous week, senior Lyric Steele stole the show. Lyric started the evening anchoring the 4x100 relay team to a 4th place finish. An hour later, she topped a field of 48 of the best 200 runners in the state with a time of 25.17. Then to cap off the night, she set a new meet record in the 100 with a time of 12.15, once again taking top spot on the podium. Her performance earned her outstanding female sprinter of the meet. The Devils have a Dual meet with New Albany on Tuesday before heading north to participate in the Pike Invitational next Saturday.
