Jeffersonville High School hires Emmy Award Winning Sports Director, Fred Cowgill Jeffersonville, IN - June 25th, 2024 - 7:00pm Tuesday night the GCCS Corporation Board of Trustees approved the hiring of former WLKY Sports Director and Anchor, Fred Cowgill. For 38 years Fred Cowgill called WLKY home as he brought the Louisville television market local and national sports stories as the stations sports director and anchor. Fred was paired with news anchors Vicki Dortch and Rick Van Hoose and Chief Meteorologist Jay Cardosi for 28 years, thought to be the longest run of a 4-person anchor team in the history of local news in the United States. Now Fred Cowgill will call Jeffersonville High School and WJHI home as he joins the faculty as the schools Radio/TV teacher when classes begin August 1st. When asked, why now and why Jeffersonville High School? Fred’s response was, “I was looking for another adventure and with people who wanted me. I wanted it to be a no-brainer. Jeffersonville checked all those boxes and more. Some of the best facilities in the United States along with fantastic people committed to making the Red Devils the best version of themselves. It’s an honor and a privilege to be a part of it.” Fred brings with him a vast amount of knowledge and experience that he is ready to share with our JHS students. The recognition for Fred’s work includes 17 “Best of Louisville” Awards from Louisville Magazine, The Kentucky Derby Festival's Dean Eagle Award for service to horse racing, “Kentucky Sportscaster of the Year” Awards by the National Sports Media Association, "Best of Kentucky" Awards from Kentucky Monthly, "Kentucky Best Sportscaster" Awards from the Associated Press and an Emmy for coverage of Muhammad Ali’s funeral. Fred covered almost every major sporting event in the country in his 49 year broadcasting career. His favorite story is American Pharoah in 2015 winning horse racing's first Triple Crown in 37 years. A close second is the historic 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup win at Valhalla. “We are thrilled to welcome Fred Cowgill to our Red Devil family.” says JHS Principal, Pam Hall. “Fred is the best in the broadcast business and his experience and passion will challenge and ignite a new wave of enthusiasm among our students.” Fred is a member of The Greater Jefferson County Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame and The American Diabetes Association Hall of Fame. Fred was born in Johnson City, N.Y. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with a BS in Broadcasting and Management and from Boston University with a MS in Broadcast Journalism. He got his start in broadcasting in 1975 at WRCC Radio in Suffern, N.Y. He then worked at a variety of radio stations in Knoxville, Tennessee while in school there. His television sports career began in 1980 at CNN. He later worked for the ABC affiliate in Rochester, N.Y., (WOKR/WHAM).
