Jeffersonville Girls Wrestling Makes History at Inaugural IHSAA Sectional Championships The Jeffersonville girls wrestling team achieved a historic milestone at the first-ever IHSAA Sectional Championships held at Floyd Central. While the Red Devils have proudly included girls on their wrestling roster for over 20 years, this event marked a new chapter for the program—and it was well worth the wait. Jeffersonville qualified eight wrestlers for the Mooresville Regional by placing in the top four of their respective weight classes, securing a runner-up finish in the team standings and outperforming all Clark and Floyd County teams. Sectional Champions Leading the way were two sectional champions: • Kristin Brown (100 lbs) • Kaylea Beauchamp (135 lbs) Kaylea, a senior with an impressive record, has placed 5th and 3rd in past Indiana High School Girls Wrestling Association (IHSGWA) state finals. Now undefeated at 26-0, with every victory by pin, she is on a determined quest to capture the state title at the inaugural IHSAA State Championships. Outstanding Finalists Three additional Red Devils earned runner-up finishes, showcasing their remarkable progress this season: • Scarlett McRae: Scarlett didn’t win a match last year but entered this season with renewed confidence following an All-State soccer campaign. Her hard work has paid off, with her win total surpassing 16 matches as she earned her first trip to the sectional finals. • Abi Lemon: A returning state qualifier and four-sport athlete, Abi lost a narrow 1-0 decision in the finals. Her ability to execute her matches exactly as planned earned praise from Coach Somerville, who shared, “I’m proud of her for sticking to it and performing as we planned.” • Venus Plamp: The senior leader of the team made her first finals appearance, showcasing her growth and dedication. Additional Regional Qualifiers • PJ Lewis (235 lbs): In her first year of wrestling, the senior exceeded expectations by out-wrestling her sixth seed and pinning three opponents to claim third place. • Dannielle Hill (155 lbs): Another senior, Dannielle pulled off two dramatic come-from-behind wins by pin to advance. • Abril Andre’s (130 lbs): The sophomore placed fourth, securing her place at the Mooresville Regional. Top Six Placers Contributing to Team Success Adding crucial points to Jeffersonville’s team total were three additional wrestlers who placed in the top six: • Justise Clubb • Leandra Willis • Levi Evans These performances played a pivotal role in securing Jeffersonville’s runner-up finish in the team standings. Team Bond and Support Coach Struck expressed pride in the team’s enthusiasm and unity, highlighting the support from the boys’ team. He noted, “When we wrestle for others, we usually get something we strive for as well.” The collective energy and camaraderie within the program have been crucial to its success. Team Standings 1.
