Meet Recap

What a great night of track and field! The Devils were able to hold off the defending sectional champs, Silver Creek, in a very tightly contested meet. The Devils were able to win on outstanding performances by some older athletes and some new faces too. Tony Cappola set a new sectional record in the pole vault @ 15 ft 6 in., Victor Dailey won the high jump with a 6 ft 6 in jump, and Dayna Overton continued his winning ways in the shot put throwing 52 ft 11 inches. Bailey Hecker ran a great race in the 800 defeating Matthew Bottorff, a friend and rival. Newcomers to the winners’ circle for Jeff this year include two young sprinters named Isaac Findley and Karder Thornton who finished 1st and 2nd in the 200 dash. They were also big in the 400 relay win along with Johnny Beemer and Tyrell Spalding. Tyrell came in for an injured Jacoby Haynes and ran the best race of his life! Allen Pettis won the 400 dash in a great dual with Johnny Beemer.
The results are attached and you will see a number of unsung heroes like Nick Smigel, Will Simpson, Jordan Barnett, Kameron Hecker, and others who scored points that made the difference in the evening. Perhaps the highlight of the evening was the 1600 relay (Beemer, Hecker, Pettis, Findley) in which the Devils led wire-to-wire with an anchor run by Isaac Findley that blew everyone away and capped the victory for the Devils.
The boys will move on to the Bloomington North Regional next Thursday.

Meet Recap

Sectional Results 2017

What an exciting evening of track and field for the Lady Red Devils. Last night, we won big, by a 33 point spread. This was our fourth consecutive sectional win. We scored 136 points to Silver Creek’s 103 points. Madison Consolidated finished third with 82 points. Several of our team members qualified in events for Regionals. The top three competitors per event will compete next Tuesday in Bloomington.

Starting with field event qualifiers were pole vaulters Mariah Owens and Evelynn Clay, finishing second and third. Clay met a personal best of 9 feet.. Long jump qualifiers were Jhala Henry and Aa’Leiah Winford who finished first and third. Henry jumped a season best of 17’10.25,” just missing the state standard by three quarters. Henry will also compete in the 400 and 200 at Regionals. Henry won the 400 but finished third in the 200 as she ran out of gas after putting up gold performances all evening. Instead, Winford ran away with the gold in the 200 and in the 100 also advancing her to the next round. The two mile relay qualified for regional which consisted of Josey Noel, Amirah Daugharty, Taylor Wooten, and Allison Blevins. These young ladies placed third overall. The 400 meter relay also advanced as they claimed another victory. Those competitors (Aa’Leiah Winford, Callista Tate, Tamia Todd, and Jhala Henry) are not far off the school record of 49.00 set in 1977. With a few more hand-exchange improvements, they should be able to beat their personal record set last night of 49.68. In the distant races, Taylor Wooten advanced in the 3200 meters placing second and Allison Blevins fought for a third place finish in the 1600 meters. Other notable performances include those athletes who just missed qualifying by one place: Tamia Todd in the 100 meters; Marriya Henry in the 100 hurdles, Noelle Gray in the 300 hurdles, DaNazsha Martin, I’Leese Stevenson, Noel Gray, and Callista Tate in the mile relay. Many of these young ladies ran their fastest times, but simply did not make the regional team requirements. JaKayla Bendermon hurdled a sixth place finish in the 300 hurdles. Callie Tate placed sixth in the 400 meters. Ashaunti Bacon picked up two fifth places in the throws and Alyse Wheeler squeezed in a seventh place finish in discus. Josey Noel ran a competitive 800 meters, finishing eighth for the team.
