Multiple Teams · Boys basketball season tickets available for pick-up Nov. 13

Save the date — November 13 will be a can’t-miss event at Johnson Arena.

On Monday, Nov. 13, the JHS boys basketball team will host a special evening to showcase the new-look Red Devils, honor season ticket holders, and enjoy the return of high school hoops to southern Indiana.

“We’re looking forward to a great season this year, and would like to thank (season ticket holders) for being a part of our valued Red Devil sports family,” athletic director Todd Satterly said.

The event is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m., and last until roughly 8 p.m. Season tickets holders will have the opportunity to pick up their season tickets, and enjoy some refreshments while taking in a Red Devil team practice.

Head coach Joe Luce will begin his second season at Jeffersonville High School. Last season, the team finished the year 14-11, including boasting an impressive 12-3 record at home. Luce will lean heavily on senior forward Bailey Falkenstein, who recently committed to play baseball and basketball at Olney Central Junior College.

Coed Junior Varsity Wrestling, Coed Varsity Wrestling · 5K race to honor former JHS teacher, coach this weekend

The 2017 version of the annual ‘Rhinehart Run’ will take place on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Charlestown State Park.

Check-in will begin at 9:00 a.m. A short remembrance prayer will begin at 9:25 a.m., with the 5K race begin at 9:30 a.m. Additionally, the event will hold a one mile Family Fun Walk following the 5K’s start.

Adults and children of all ages (and their K-9 friends!) are welcome to walk, or run, in this event. The cost is $25, and participants will receive a t-shirt for signing up. Donations are also welcome, and will aid a ‘Christian Wrestler’ in their collegiate pursuits, as well as help provide wrestling opportunities for the youth of the Jeffersonville community.

The event is in remembrance of former JHS teacher and coach Robby Rhinehart, who died on Aug. 19, 2009. The West Virginia native was a math teacher, and a wrestling and cross country coach before spending his final three years at JHS.

News · Cross country comes up short at Regional; Schansberg advances

Both the boys and the girls cross country teams came up short from advancing to the semi-state competition last Saturday.

The boys team finished in sixth place, just one place shy of advancing to the next round. However Brennan Schansberg did finish high enough to advance to the Brown Country semi-state competition on Saturday, Oct. 21.

“(The loss) does not take away from a very successful season that these boys put together,” said head coach Mark Felix. “It is very disappointing for these kids, as they are arguably the best team of my career, and we just had a bad day at the wrong time.”

The girls’ day was a bit more rough, as the team finished in eighth place.

Rocio Lozada, in her first season of running, finished in 31st place, the high on the team. Senior Taylor Wooten was right behind her in 32nd place. However the team’s top runner, Haley Nichols, suffered from a respiratory infection and was unable to finish the race.

Meet Recap

Floyd Central dominated everyone in this meet! Forest Park had a nice race as did Corydon. I knew that everything would have to be perfect for us to advance today but we were far from perfect today. Our number 1 runner, Haley Nichols, was unable to finish the race suffering from a severe respiratory infection. It was a shame because we had some good performances today. Rocio Lozada and Taylor Wooten came in together at 31st and 32nd as they continued to show big improvement on the season. Amirah Daugharty stepped-up to the number 3 spot today running her best race to date. It just wasn’t enough because losing your top runner is devastating in cross country. This team has struggled with injury and illness all season, and today was no exception. They are a gritty bunch of young ladies that work hard but have had some bad luck. In a different year, this team might have had a chance to advance but not today. I am proud of their effort this season. It is just a shame we lost Haley today. It might have changed the entire race for this team.

Meet Recap

What an impressive race for the fans today! The big favorite (Christian Academy) was defeated, a team (Floyd Central) we beat last week finished third, and the team (New Albany) we have been trying to beat for weeks tied with us for 6th. What neither we nor New Albany thought was that both of us would be eliminated by Heritage Hills, a team with two outstanding runners and the rest of the team pretty average. Their third man finished 41st. We had beaten them previously and never thought that they would run as well as they did. Finishing 2nd and 4th as individuals certainly affected the overall outcome of the meet for them. Jasper has been consistent all season and we felt that they or New Albany would be the teams that we had to beat to advance. While we had beaten Floyd last week, I knew that they would not have consecutive poor races. They never do. We ran well but not well enough for a regional meet. Our top three guys (Schansberg, Pettis, and Sanders) ran well but our next two places have not been consistent this season and that weakness was exposed today. Overall this was a fun race to be a part of but it was also very disappointing to have such a good season come to an abrupt and somewhat unexpected end. Brennan Schansberg will move on to represent us at the Brown County Semi-State next Saturday, and I am very proud of his effort. His is the epitome of the kid that works hard, improves, and overcomes obstacles to be the best he can be.
